For more than a century men and women round the globe have been celebrating International Women’s Day. Dating back to 1909, the day focuses on remembering the achievements and contributions women have made to society, and commemorating those who have fought and those who are still fighting for gender equality. With mainstream campaigns like Times Up and Period Poverty  bringing to light the gender disparity so many women still face, there’s a strong sense of feminist solidarity and a global consensus that action must be taken. This year the theme is #PressforProgress and the organisation is calling for everyone to unite to collectively fight against inequality.

But how can you get involved and continue to support the campaign after March 8th? Women’s charities play an integral role in the grass roots of the movement, encouraging, supporting and fighting for women who are yet to find their voice. Volunteering is one way to contribute and help champion change – and many Hackney organisations are searching for volunteers like you to give a few hours of your time each month or week.

Feeling inspired? To mark the occasion we’ve rounded up just some of London’s most inspiring charities who are helping women in Hackney, and need your help to make a change.
