YOUTH VOLUNTEERING – BEST PRACTICE TRAINING

During 2014-15, we joined the campaign led by the Mayor of London, to
increase the rate of volunteering amongst young people.

Over the year, we delivered best practice training to 156 charities and community groups from all over north east London. Our training encouraged charities to recognise the value of hosting young volunteers and to ensure that for the young people, their experience of volunteering was rewarding.

Working with local CVSs and Volunteer Centres across Hackney, Enfield, Haringey, Camden, Islington and Barnet, we delivered 14 courses to charities and community organisations from all sectors. We worked with staff and volunteer managers to break down negative stereotypes of hosting young volunteers and to recognise the uniquely positive contribution they can make. Our training also covered all relevant legislation and procedures including DBS checks, health and safety legislation, risk assessments, and best practice in marketing, recruitment, training and support.

The project was coordinated by Greater London Volunteering, on behalf of the Mayor of London, who was keen to see more young people, in particular, under-16s, engage with their community. Many charities went onto host young volunteers for the first time, and to even create youth-specific volunteer roles.
