“Be the Difference” – Volunteer Fair and “Volunteering for Hackney” Initiative Launch – A Massive Success
Tuesday 20th June saw Volunteer Centre Hackney’s quarterly Volunteer Fair and the launch of Hackney Council’s “Volunteering for Hackney” initiative take place at the Hackney Museum.
The scorching sun didn’t put Hackney people off as they came along to find out how they can be the difference.
We were very pleased to welcome the Mayor of Hackney, Philip Glanville, and Cabinet member, Councillor Jon Burke who launched the “Volunteering for Hackney” initiative, which is to provide small grassroots community groups that operate at a very local level, with structured strategic support, to help them thrive and grow.
We also heard from Bobby Kassanga, from Hackney Wick FC who inspired us with the story of Hackney Wick FC and showed what a huge difference community groups make to local communities.
Nearly 60 visitors came along to find out about volunteering in Hackney, to meet 10 inspiring charities showcasing their opportunities ranging from befriending roles, sports coaching, teaching, to assisting in outdoor conservation projects. A huge thank you to Shoreditch Town Hall, Mini Mermaids Running Club, Abney Park Cemetery, Bright Learning, Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park, Bump Buddies, HCVS, Out and About from City and Hackney Carers Centre, Hackney Pirates, London Fields Primary School for giving their time to meet volunteers, and to Hackney Unites to give advice on starting campaigns.
Also, a huge thank you to VCH volunteers for making the event run smoothly and a huge success.
“I came to the fair last year and it was inspiring and useful to meet other organisations in Hackney. Thanks to these events I have found many volunteers for our project” Zena at Shoreditch Town Hall.
“I would like to use my skills to help others and develop personally. There were a couple of roles I feel I would be able to use my skills for” Volunteer Fair visitor.
Mayor of Hackney, Philip Glanville, said: “The work volunteers and community groups do in the borough underpins all that we are trying to achieve in making Hackney a better, fairer and more sustainable borough. I am passionate about community action being central to our political debates”.
